DIY Tips to Stay Warm This Winter

  • February 4, 2026

As we move deeper into January here in Orange Beach and Gulf Shores, colder snaps can put extra strain on your heat pump or furnace. A little simple DIY care can go a long way toward keeping your system running safely and efficiently.

Here are three easy tips you can tackle yourself:

1. **Check and replace your air filter**

A dirty filter makes your system work harder and can lead to higher energy bills and poor heating. Take a look at your filter once a month and replace it if it looks dusty or gray.

2. **Keep outdoor units clear**

For heat pumps, make sure the outdoor unit is free of leaves, sand, pine straw, and other debris. Gently clear away anything within 2–3 feet of the unit so it has plenty of room for airflow.

3. **Set a steady thermostat temperature**

Instead of making big temperature swings, choose a comfortable setting and leave it there. This helps your system run more efficiently and reduces unnecessary wear and tear during colder weather.

If you notice strange noises, reduced airflow, or rooms that aren’t staying comfortable, that’s a good sign it’s time to have a professional take a look.
